Up to seven hurt as two-car crash blocks coast road

UP to seven people were injured in a two-car crash which closed a 15-mile stretch of the main road from York to the coast for several hours last night.

The incident, described by the Highways Agency as "police-led", was on the coast-bound side of the A64 at Barton Hill on the York side of Malton, at 3.30pm yesterday.

The carriageway was still blocked at nightfall and not expected to re-open before 10 pm. Traffic was being diverted.

Police said there had been seven casualties but the ambulance service only had records of transporting six.

The Highways Agency said the incident was "police-led" but police referred all inquiries to a tape-recorded message service, which had minimal information.
