Sewer flooding risk cut in town after £800,000 underground tank installed

Yorkshire Water has spent £800,000 installing a huge underground waste water storage tank in the grassed amenity area in Barrow Lane. The tank has a capacity of 535,000 litres and will collect storm water during wet weather and hold it until sewer levels are back to normal, before gradually sending it on its way for treatment.

Project manager Dominic Cunney said: “We understand the project was disruptive to residents at times and we would like to thank them for their continued patience whilst we completed this important project.”

Meanwhile, residents in York who have been victims of flooding or have concerns about the issue are being urged to attend a public meeting tomorrow hosted by MP Hugh Bayley. The event is being held at the Novotel in Fishergate from 10am and will be attended officials from the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water.

Mr Bayley, who is the Labour MP for York Central, said: “I want to hear more from people who have had problems during the past few weeks and to give them the opportunity to question the experts.”
