Sewer repairs close busy city streets

TWO of York's main thoroughfares are to be shut as part of an overhaul of its Victorian sewer network to boost flood defences in the city.

The 500,000 scheme to replace sections of public sewer along Tower Street and Fishergate, which have been prone to collapsing in recent years due to their age and are currently being overloaded during times of heavy rainfall, is part of a 120m scheme revealed in the Yorkshire Post yesterday.

The work will begin on Monday and is planned to take several months.

Part of Tower Street will be closed for two weeks from January 10, while from January 24, a stretch of Fishergate between the junction of Cemetery Road and Melbourne Street will be closed.

John Bond of Yorkshire Water's community engagement team, said: "Whilst there are many benefits that will come from these improvements we recognise that our work will necessitate the part closure of two main routes through the city. This is clearly less than ideal and we want to reassure customers that we'll do all we can to complete the work as quickly as possible, with the minimum amount of disruption."
