Sex case man found dead in Leeds cell

A 23-year-old man accused of sexual assault was found hanging in his cell in Leeds today, the Prison Service said.

Matthew Brown, who was on remand in the city's Armley Jail over assault occasioning actual bodily harm and sexual assault, died shortly before 6am.

Staff and paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead around 10 minutes after being discovered, the Prison Service said.

A spokeswoman said: "HMP Leeds prisoner Matthew Brown was found hanging in his cell at 5.40am on Wednesday 6 October.

"Staff and paramedics attended and attempted to resuscitate him; however he was pronounced dead by paramedics at 05.51am.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
