Shafilea’s mother in court denial

A mother accused of murdering her daughter because she brought shame on the family has told a court she had nothing to do with the teenager’s death.

Farzana Ahmed, 49, and her husband Iftikhar, 52, of Liverpool Road, Warrington, are on trial at Chester Crown Court charged with killing their Bradford-born daughter Shafilea, 17, at their family home in 2003.

Mrs Ahmed, who has claimed she saw her husband beat Shafilea on the night of the alleged murder, gave evidence through an interpreter.

Mukhtar Hussain QC, defending Mrs Ahmed, asked: “Did you kill Shafilea, your daughter?” “No,” she said.

Mr Hussain asked: “Did you play any part in her killing?” “No,” she replied.

He added: “Did you see Shafilea being killed?” “No.”

The case continues today.
