Shakespeare portrait on its way to region

THE only portrait of William Shakespeare painted from life is to leave London for the first time in its history and come to Yorkshire.

The Chandos Portrait will be the star attraction in the exhibition Writers of Influence: Shakespeare to JK Rowling, in Sheffield in April.

Attributed to John Taylor and named after a previous owner, The Chandos Portrait was acquired in 1856 and is hugely popular with visitors to the National Portrait Gallery, where it is usually homed.

It will be exhibited at the Graves Gallery from April 17 to July 3.
