Sharks settle into aquarium home

A PAIR of zebra sharks is settling into their new home at a visitor attraction in Hull – where bosses hope they will eventually breed.

The male and female zebra sharks were placed in quarantine at the Deep aquarium after arriving from Indonesia a few weeks ago.

The sharks, which are born stripy, gradually turn spotty, giving them their alternative name – Leopard shark.

If they breed, they will become part of the European studbook captive breeding programme.

The Deep's science officer, Graham Hill said the two were thriving.

"The male weighs 13kg and is 1.5m in length and female weighs 14kg and measures 1.6m.

"We hope they will breed when they reach sexual maturity, in several years time."
