Shed thefts spark police warning

A spate of overnight shed and garage burglaries in a peaceful North Yorkshire village has sparked a police warning to residents.

Thieves broke into 10 sheds and garages in Wormersley, near Eggborough, overnight between December 30 and 31 - with Main Street, Cow Lane and Park Lane listed as the worst hit.

The suspects got away with tools and fishing tackle, although they failed to gain entry to some of the sheds.

A Citroen van was also broken into and thieves stole a stash of tools from inside the vehicle.

North Yorkshire Police officers are warning residents to be extra vigilant and make sure their shed and outbuilding security is up to date.

Advice released yesterday includes locking garages or sheds, fitting strong padlocks to doors, securing larger items to walls and installing alarm systems. External lighting, locking away tools and marking property is also being advised.

Police have also launched an appeal for information on the thefts.

Anyone who saw or heard anything during the night or noticed any suspicious vehicles in the area is being urged to contact PC Sarah Ward on 101.
