Shedding light on ancient culture

Chinese shadow puppets are among the attractions to feature in a major exhibition charting more than 3,000 years of Chinese culture at York Art Gallery this summer.

The puppets are among more than 100 remarkable objects from the British Museum included in the touring exhibition called China: Journey to the East. The exhibition is part of a national tour organised through the British Museum's Partnership UK scheme and also includes artefacts from the York Museums Trust collections and York's Chinese communities.

Also featured are gems from the collection of Sir Hans Sloane, the founding father of the British Museum. Helen Walsh, assistant curator of decorative arts, said: "We are delighted to be involved in this tour, which is the largest UK loan of Chinese material the British Museum has yet undertaken."
