The Skipton dog sales routinely draw top trainers and dogs from all over the British Isles. More than 1,200 people attended the event, among them Gus Dermody, presenter of BBC2's One Man and His Dog, who brought two dogs with him. The top price paid for a sheep dog was 3,900 guineas.

Jeremy Iris, of Skipton Auction Mart, said that it had been the biggest attendance at a sheep dog sale that the mart had ever seen. He added: "We have people here from all over the UK and all over Ireland. We have even sold over the telephone to people from America before.

"We have a good central location and I think people use this as a social event as well."
