Sheeran has finger on pulse with Adele gesture parody on TV Sport Relief show

IT WAS the moment that caused the controversy at this year’s Brit Awards.

And Adele’s one-fingered salute after her acceptance speech for winning British album of the year was cut short appears to be entering rock ’n roll folklore already.

Halifax-born double Brit Award winner Ed Sheeran mimicked the record-breaking star when he appeared on the BBC’s Let’s Dance for Sport Relief.

But Sheeran, who landed the best British breakthrough and best British male gongs at the music awards, attempted to avoid controversy by sticking up his ring finger instead of his middle one.

Host of the celebrity dance show Alex Jones was introducing Sheeran when co-host Steve Jones came over and said: “I can’t believe I’m about to do this but I’m going to have to cut you off there. We have only got enough time for you to play so Alex if you can leave.”

Sheeran then stuck his finger up Jones, mimicking Adele’s gesture after she was interrupted by Brits host James Corden to make way for a performance by indie band Blur, who were given an outstanding contribution to music award.

People took to Twitter to talk about Sheeran’s cheeky parody of Adele, who also won best British female artist at the awards on Tuesday last week.

One user wrote: “Ed Sheeran on BBC1 family viewing time, making obscene gestures and singing about getting drunk. Steve Jones calls it entertaining a nation.”

Another said: “Ed Sheeran just pulled the finger on BBC1 as part of a parody of that Adele moment at the Brits. Wonder if that was part of the plan...”

The public voted for Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards to appear in the March 17 final of the celebrity dance contest after his Austin Powers routine. The panel of judges then opted to put Miles Jupp through following his performance of Prodigy’s Firestarter.
