And now Sheffield has been named as the best place for a city break.

Ahead of the Bank Holiday TripAdvisor has said that Brits looking for weekend break should look north for a better deal.

Trips to southern cities were found to cost almost double the price of their northern counterparts, with Sheffield clinching top spot for the best bargain when considering a trip in the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Sheffield, which claims to be the UK’s greenest city, offers those looking for a three-night trip a £614 bargain, half the price of an equivalent stay in London which costs a far dearer £1,331.

The south Yorkshire city is joined in the top 10 cheapest destinations by fellow northern powerhouses Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Leeds, Chester and Glasgow.

Sheffield, the birthplace of well-known Brits such as Jessica Ennis, Jarvis Cocker and Sean Bean, draws in the tourists with cheap hotels and dinners.

In contrast, London tops the priciest list for several categories, including taxis, dinners and attractions.

Cities have not been the only beneficiaries of increased tourist activity.

In all 200,000 more people explored the Yorkshire Dales National Park last year, with both the legacy of the Tour de France and the enduring appeal of the region leading to a six per cent increase in new visitors.
