Sherlock fans sought for bid to break world record

ONE of Sherlock Holmes’ great skills, according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was his ability to disguise himself.

Now his fans will have the chance to don themselves in his most famous outfit, as a Yorkshire city attempts to break the world record for the largest number of people dressed as Baker Street’s most famous resident.

Organisers are asking Sherlockians to don their deerstalkers, grab their magnifying glasses and head for Temple Newsam on August 31, to be part of the largest ever gathering of people dressed as the indomitable detective. The event is organised as part of a campaign by Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation, to raise money for a new £2m Yorkshire brain research centre.

Clair Challenor-Chadwick, appeal director for the Yorkshire Brain Research Centre, said: “Sherlock may live at Baker Street, London, but according to the most influential fictional biography of Holmes, by Baring-Gould, he was born in Yorkshire. We want to reclaim Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s much-loved character for Yorkshire.” Details at www.sherlockworldrecord.com
