The body of a 26-year-old woman was found. She had apparently died from a gunshot wound to the head. The scene was cordoned off following the incident in a cottage behind the Black Bull pub in the town centre.

A police spokesman said officers had been called by ambulance crews to the address in East Witton Road. The incident was not being treated as suspicious and police were not looking for anyone else, he added.

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out last night.
