Shopping PC who foiled gunman up for award

A POLICE officer on a trip to the supermarket who disarmed a would-be robber carrying a gun has been nominated for a national Police Bravery Award.

Pc Sara Widdrington, of North Yorkshire Police, was off duty and shopping with her son at Tesco on Westwood in Scarborough in November 2012 when, as she approached the checkout, she noticed a man holding a black pistol and pointing it towards a cashier.

She ran around the checkout area and grabbed the man’s hand which was holding the pistol, lowering his arm so the gun was pointing at the ground. She told him to drop the gun but he replied: “No, get off, it’s loaded.”

She continued to restrain him with the help of a member of staff until police arrived.

Pc Widdrington and her son will attend the Police Bravery Awards in October.
