Shortlist announced for 'lost' Man Booker Prize

Four deceased authors are among a shortlist of six for a one-off "lost" Man Booker Prize to honour a great novel four decades on, it was announced yesterday.

The prize – for books published in 1970 – also includes a past Booker victor and two other former nominees.

Unlike the usual prize, the award for those books which have stood the test of time will now be voted for by the public.

The shortlisted novels are:

The Birds On The Trees by Nina Bawden (Virago);

Troubles by JG Farrell (Phoenix House);

The Bay Of Noon by Shirley Hazzard (Virago);

Fire From Heaven by Mary Renault (Arrow);

The Driver's Seat by Muriel Spark (Penguin);

The Vivisector by Patrick White (Vintage).(

Farrell, Renault, Spark and White are all nominated posthumously.

Voting through the website (www.themanbookerprize.

com) begins today and closes on April 23.
