‘Shot in the arm’ for deprived suburb

A DEVELOPER expects to create more than 1,000 jobs with a major scheme in one of Doncaster’s most deprived suburbs.

Bosses at Henry Boot Developments say their scheme at Capitol Park, on Omega Boulevard, Thorne, near the M18, would see a hotel, pub, small to medium-sized businesses and a supermarket built.

The hope is that European cash will be approved for the project. Doncaster Council planning committee has given its backing to the scheme but a final decision will be made by the Government.

The developers’ spokesman Jason Tait said the jobs would become available when the development was completed but there would also be building jobs while the scheme was under construction.

Coun Martin Williams, leader of Thorne and Moorends Town Council, said: “I think this is a capital idea.

“We suffer from a lack of employment in this area and this is exactly what we needed – a shot in the arm.”
