The youngster broke her ankle just two days before she was set to be crowned Horsforth’s Gala Queen.

And Charley. 14, made sure she wasn’t late for her royal appointment after being released from hospital following surgery the previous day.

But with the help of previous gala queens and their families she was able to take the starring role during the celebrations – with the use of a blinged up wheelchair.

Mum Karen told the YEP: “We thought that she wouldn’t be able to do it.

“She put on a brave smile but she felt every bump on that road.

“I think it must have been all the adrenaline from people cheering her along the way.”

Thousands of people enjoyed the sun in Horsforth’s Hall Park for the return of the annual gala.

And creative youngsters from Brownberrie Lane Pre School scooped the title for best fancy dress with their Thunderbirds themed outfits.

Organiser and local councillor Dawn Collins said: “It was absolutely wonderful and the children put in a lot of really good effort for their fancy dress in the parade.

“The Gala Queen broke her leg on the Thursday at sports day so it was wonderful that she managed to get here.

“It just wouldn’t have been the same without our Gala Queen.

“Last year’s Gala Queen came up with the wheelchair and the previous year’s father put on the board to help keep her leg up.

“It was really nice their previous families all helped out to make sure she had a lovely day.”

And the planning is already underway to make sure next year’s celebrations are just as successful.

Dawn added: “It is a really good event that helps to bring the community together.”
