Showcase for city's artists

Artist Laura Davies, from Fulwood, Sheffield, showed off her paintings at this year's Great Sheffield Art Show, which ran in the city over the weekend.

The 23rd annual show, which took place at the Octagon Centre, showcased the work of amateur artists from across the region.

A spokesman said: "The Great Sheffield Art Show has been responsible for nurturing scores of amateurs who have gone on to become professionals. The event is run solely by volunteers and showcases over 1,500 pieces of art work from over 600 artists, both amateurs and professionals, with many people exhibiting and selling publically for the first time."

Ms Davies's work will next be on show at the Art in the Gardens event, which takes place at Sheffield's Botanical Gardens from Friday, September 3, to Sunday, September 5.

She said: "My inspiration is primarily from the Peak District and surrounding areas. My work is a combination of contemporary impressionism and minimalistic fluidity, but always consists of traditional subject matter. This creates familiar pictures that are easy on the eye but with a modern edge."
