WORLD championship squash player Nick Matthew will join community heroes to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay to Sheffield.

The relay will tour Sheffield on Sunday June 1, visiting landmarks at High Bradfield, Concord Sports Centre and the English Institute of Sport-Sheffield as the countdown to Glasgow 2014 reaches Yorkshire.

Throughout the day the city will host an array of sports to showcase its active pedigree, including squash master classes and racketball sessions with Mr Matthew, who is the current Commonwealth Games squash champion, as well as judo, karate, gymnastics, roller derby and figure skating.

The baton relay will also drop into Hull on June 11 and Leeds on June 12, before making its final journey to Scotland for the start of the Commonwealth Games on July 23.

The Games are being held in Glasgow, which yesterday was announced as the venue for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which takes place in December.

Last year’s event was held at Leeds Arena, where Andy Murray was awarded the main trophy in Miami via videolink by Martina Navratilova.
