A wind turbine has become the latest addition to the industrial landscape at Saltend to the east of Hull.
On average, the 280ft turbine at Yorkshire Water's treatment works will provide a third of the facility's energy needs. By using the electricity generated by the turbine at this site, Yorkshire Water said it would be reducing its carbon emissions by about 1,150 tonnes every year. The turbine will also make "a significant contribution" towards achieving the company's green energy target – to generate 10 per cent by 2010.
Wind turbine project manager at Yorkshire Water, Mike Ward, said: "We believe that investing in alternative, sustainable sources of energy is responsible given the context of the increasing energy prices, uncertainty over long-term security of supply of energy and the requirement for companies to reduce their carbon emissions."
