Signs of success for scheme aiding rural communities

VILLAGES and parishes across the North York Moors National Park are reaping the benefits of more than £140,000 in grants pledged by a rural improvement scheme, with more money now being made available.

The Small Scale Enhancements Scheme (SSE), funded by the North York Moors, Coast & Hills LEADER Programme, provides support for small conservation and heritage projects and has recently led to the creation of a new village wildlife area in Snainton, the restoration of historic local features such as pinfolds and wells, the installation of new interpretation boards and the development and publication of information leaflets, trails and walks.

Now the organisers behind the scheme have increased the money available to projects from £5,000 to £7,500, with funding in place until December 2013.

One of the first projects funded by the scheme was an interpretation board about Egton Mortuary Chapel, where there has been a church on the site since the 14 Century.

Peter Godbold from Egton Parochial Church Council said: “The interpretation panel has enabled us to tell visitors to the area about this unique building and its heritage.

“Praise has been given by many visitors and locals of its usefulness and professional appearance and we are eternally grateful for the support and advice given by the scheme.”

Mike Horrocks, LEADER programme manager, said: “It’s a great opportunity to make the most of the special and cherished features in our villages.”
