Singer donates proceeds of gig to flood victims

SINGER-songwriter Patti Smith is to donate proceeds from a Yorkshire gig to help flood victims.

The US-born icon will give the money from a gig at Hebden Bridge Trades Club to the Calder Valley’s flood relief fund.

Tickets for the intimate gig on September 8 sold out within minutes of going on sale.

The club expects the event to raise about £3,000.

A club spokesman said members were touched by the star’s generous gesture.

It is understood that Smith, 65, who is a fan of the Brontës, arranged to play Hebden Bridge after visiting Haworth, home of the literary sisters.

The Community Foundation for Calderdale is administering the flood relief fund, which has raised over £100,000,

Over 100 grants have already been made to community groups and householders who suffered in the flooding on June 22 and July 9 in the Calder Valley area.
