Singer opens club culture museum

HULL-born singer and actor Roland Gift will open Hull's unique Museum of Club Culture later this month. The museum, the brainchild of author, artist and lecturer Mark "Wigan" Williams, is among a cluster of artistic projects setting up in redundant fruit warehouses along Humber Street.

Williams has poured 30 years of clubbing experience into the museum along with his own archive of memorabilia.

The launch at 6.30pm on November 17 features Manchester-based artist and event producer Barney, who will be presenting street art from round the world.

On November 21, Williams – nicknamed "Wigan" because he was a Wigan Casino regular in the 1970s – will be presenting an introductory workshop on contemporary graphic arts and club culture and the music industry to run alongside Fruit's Humber Street Market.

Meanwhile on November 25, Captain Zip will be introducing his films that documented the emerging punk rock sub culture on the Kings Rd Chelsea from 1976 to 77, as part of the museum's series of talks by guest filmmakers on the theme of Rockumentary. Admission to events is free or a recommended donation of 2.
