Sir Jimmy meets the best and brightest

Top medical students from Leeds University yesterday met Sir Jimmy Savile who fixed it for them to get an invaluable insight into the world of research.

In 2008, the former television presenter and DJ, who lives in the city, pledged more than 300,000 over five years to support the Leeds Undergraduate Research Enterprise programme which nurtures the development of medical students with ambitions to become academic clinicians. The scholars get a bursary to conduct research during the summer holidays.

It gives the brightest students the chance to excel and test themselves alongside professional medical researchers. Leeds has become an internationally-recognised centre for medical research in the last two decades in a drive which has seen tens of millions of pounds in inward investment.
