Six-figure aim for city half marathon

Organisers of this year's Sheffield Half Marathon have launched a campaign for every runner to raise at least £30 for the race's 10 nominated charities, in what will be the 30th annual running of the event.

The 13.1-mile road race, which follows a route from Don Valley Stadium through the city centre to Hunters Bar and back, will take place on Sunday, May 8.

Last year the half marathon raised 95,000 for local causes and, this year organisers say they want to break into a six-figure sum.

If each of the runners taking part raised just 30, the event would top the 165,000 mark.

Margaret Lilley, chairman of the Sheffield Half Marathon, said: "The 10 charities we donate to are more than beneficiaries. They give up months of their time to help make the event run smoothly and help out wherever they can.

"Their charities also do a great deal of good in the local community and I would love to be able to give a record-breaking sum to them in this landmark year for the half marathon."
