A CCTV picture led to the apprehension of rapist who attacked a woman in a Rotherham car park.

Alan Ahmed, 39, was caught after police released a CCTV image of the man with the victim.

Members of the public recognised him as someone who walked down the same Parkgate street each day.

He was stopped by officers, arrested and charged with rape after DNA evidence linked him to the crime, which took place in August last year.

Ahmed, of Spalton Road, Parkgate, was jailed for six years on Thursday after pleading guilty to rape at an earlier hearing.

Det Con Rachel Morton, who lead the investigation, said she hoped the sentencing brought closure for the victim, who went through a “deeply traumatic experience and has demonstrated tremendous courage throughout”.

She said: “I must also take this opportunity to thank the media and members of the public who assisted us with our enquiries by sharing the CCTV appeal.

“The information we received directly contributed to officers locating and arresting Ahmed.

“Without the public’s assistance, this successful prosecution may not have been possible. This case shows we will go to any length to trace offenders and we encourage any victim to report incidents of this nature to police.”
