Ski village attacked for second time

ARSONISTS set fire to Sheffield Ski Village in the early yesterday, just two days after the main building at the site had been destroyed in another blaze.

Fire crews were called to the site at about 5.15am yesterday to find a small wooden hut near the top of the slopes “well alight”.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “It is believed the hut, which suffered severe fire damage, was used as a control point for the ski lift.

“Firefighters believe the blaze was started deliberately.”

On Sunday morning, as many as 30 firefighters attended a large fire, which destroyed the main reception area of the ski village.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said that the force was in the “very early stages” of a joint investigation with the fire service, to discover the cause of the first blaze, which broke out early that day.

The police spokesman added: “Officials are following lines of enquiry to establish when the fire may have started and are working closely with the owners of the site.”
