Skirmishes reported as city celebrates all things Norse

Skirmishes broke out in York at the weekend as the city’s Viking Festival got underway.

Viking re-enactors prepared for battle in the shadow of Clifford’s Tower as part of the 31st Jorvik Viking Festival which takes place in York until February 22. One of the largest events of its kind in Europe it is a city-wide celebration of the York’s Norse heritage.

On Valentine’s Day there was a torchlight guard of honour ahead of a wedding banquet held at the Merchant Taylor’s Hall in York. The event was extra special for Jonathan Alderson who dropped down on one knee and produced a ring to propose to girlfriend, Samantha Simpson, to rapturous cheers from fellow wedding guests.

Danielle Daglan, Festival Director, said: “That will certainly be one moment in their lives that Jonathan and Samantha will never forget and who knows, they may well enjoy a Viking wedding of their own!”

Events take place each day, culminating in the grand finale on the evening of Saturday 21 February, when over 200 warriors will do battle on the Eye of York in a fiery extravaganza representing the Norse myth of the first battle of the Gods. Visit www.jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk
