Small rise in traffic after tolls cut

The amount of traffic using the Humber Bridge since tolls were cut has only increased slightly, new figures show.

Overall vehicles were up 1,989 a week after tolls were halved for cars, compared to a week last April.

This equates to a rise of around 3.5 per cent. Traffic has to increase by 36 per cent over four years for the books to balance.

Steve Parnaby, leader of East Riding Council, said they could use money from reserves and there wouldn’t be any need for tolls to go up until 2016 “basically whatever happens”. He added: “My gut feeling is that I don’t think we are going to see the massive increases that were predicted.”
