PATIENTS might expect to be given advice on healthy eating but staff at a South Yorkshire hospital are also being encouraged to take more care with their diet and are using a novelty machine to try to underline the message.

The "blender bicycle" uses pedal power to crush fruit as users cycle, providing exercise and a healthy drink. The Blendavenda machine is part of a healthy living project which is operating throughout January.

A weight loss group has been set up by Barnsley Hospital's own dietetics department, stress management workshops have been organised and support made available for those wanting to stop smoking.

Consultant Paediatrician Dr Rajeev Gupta, Chairman of the Healthy Living Committee, said: "Healthy employees are even more of an asset to the organisation as they feel good within themselves and can apply that energy and positivity to their work."
