Snapshot of Dales will help protect cherished landscape

A PHOTOGRAPHY competition is being launched to capture images of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and help shape a strategy to protect the countryside.

Amateur and professional photographers can submit pictures in four categories in the free competition which is aimed at finding out what visitors believe are the most important qualities of the national park.

The competition, called Your Yorkshire Dales National Park: A snapshot, will run until November 9, although entries submitted by April 30 will be used to help shape the next National Park Management Plan. The winning entries will go on display in an exhibition at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes in February next year, and the top five photos will be turned into postcards that will be sold at the national park centres.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s chairman, Coun Carl Lis, said: “We are expecting sackfuls of entries because people have such strong feelings and passion about this beautiful national park.

“We’re eager to see all the different things people value about the Dales – whether that’s the landscape, the wildlife, the people, or something entirely different – and then, through the National Park Management Plan, develop ways to respond to these views.”

The competition categories include wildlife and habitats, people and places, fun and adventure, and farming, tourism and other employment.

All photos must have been taken within the national park boundary, and the winners will be announced on November 23. More information is available at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/your.
