Snow wardens win council praise

York Council has praised the efforts of its community snow wardens after volunteers worked hard to battle severe weather brought on by the cold snap that hit the region last week.

A total of 64 snow wardens across the city have been supporting the authority’s gritting and snow clearance teams by removing snow and ice from their local footpaths. The innovative scheme was launched last year as part of York Council’s plans to step up its response to severe weather following last winter’s big freeze.

Coun Dafydd Williams, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “I’d like to thank all the snow wardens, local residents and council staff for their hard work over the last few days. Thanks to their efforts, most residents and visitors have been able to get around the city, despite the icy conditions.”

People on Community Payback Schemes, which use low-level offenders sentenced to community service by the courts, have also been adding their efforts to snow clearance across the city.

The council is looking to double its amount of snow wardens, after receiving additional funding from the Department of Health in December.
