Snowy start for farm's new arrival

Fifteen-year-old Ava Betchetti with baby alpaca, Snowy, at Cannon Hall Farm, near Barnsley.

The white alpaca, with a few black spots, was born at the farm in Cawthorne on Sunday, January 31.

Farm director Robert Nicholson said: "He's doing very well, the only trouble is he seems to be bringing more snow. We should have called him Sunny.

"Snowy was named by one of the visitors, who thought it was fitting with the weather, and we thought it was appropriate."

An estimated 300 lambs and 50 piglets are set to be born at the farm during the February half-term holiday, which starts next Saturday.

Mr Nicholson added: "Half term is as good a time to visit as any in the whole year. We've also got some Highland cows that are set to calve shortly."

Animals that can be seen at the farm include pygmy goat kids, cattle, donkeys, Shetland ponies, llamas, wallabies, rabbits, guinea pigs and rare kune kune pigs from New Zealand.

Admission to the farm, which also has an adventure playground, deli and farm shop, costs 3.95 for adults and 3.50 for children. For more details call 01226 790427.
