So much, so near

AS THE full effect of the spending cuts begins to bite and more families are forced to replace their annual trip abroad with a cheaper alternative closer to home, there may be a silver lining for businesses in Yorkshire.

For, as those who live in the region already know – and as Welcome to Yorkshire, the tourism agency, is about to tell the world – there is an awful lot in Yorkshire worth visiting and no one who is planning a “staycation” this year has to travel very far to experience it.

Certainly, if those who run the indefatigable Welcome to Yorkshire have their way, the region’s current annual total of 216 million visitors will be far exceeded come the end of 2010 as their latest marketing drive trumpets what is rapidly becoming one of the nation’s worst-kept secrets: that if you’re going to stay in Britain, you might as well stay in Yorkshire.
