Son’s heartfelt tribute to parents

A MAN has paid tribute to his parents who died after their car left the road and hit a crash barrier.

Roy and Barbara Hall, aged 79 and 75, were travelling along the A1173 in Kings Road, Immingham, when their blue Vauxhall Astra, being driven by Mr Hall, left the road and crashed on September 7. They were taken to hospital but later died.

Their son Robert Hall said they were a devoted couple who were married for 56 years after meeting at a wedding.

“Everyone used to tell them it would never last, so much so that their song was ‘The Twelfth of Never’, and to most people’s surprise, exactly nine months after their wedding day I was born.

“My parents did everything together, from trips to car boot sales to buy bric-a-brac, to their regular trips to McDonalds to get either hamburger and chips or a plain McFlurry and apple pie, so they could have apple pie and ice cream.

“Despite never wanting to be in the house and doing so much stuff together, one thing my parents didn’t do was go on holiday.

“Their last holiday was in 1965 to Bridlington. They came home halfway through the trip as it rained and they never went on holiday again.”

Mr Hall said his father had helped his wife battle cancer on two occasions in recent years.

“During the last few years my dad spent much of his time looking after my mum, who went through two bouts of cancer,” he said.

“Mum didn’t work, she had the hardest job of all as a full time housewife, looking after my dad and the dog.”

He added: “Losing both parents in such tragic circumstances has been very hard for me and my wife Anne and children James and Rebecca, as well as my brother Trevor and his family who are currently trying to get over to Grimsby from Australia. The one thing that has given me some support is knowing that they spent much of their lives together.”
