South Africa dream trip for pupils after soccer success

A GROUP of primary school pupils from Sheffield are looking forward to a South African adventure next week after winning a trip to the country hosting this summer's World Cup.

The pupils from Bradway School are jetting off for the trip of a lifetime courtesy of Sheffield Wednesday after winning the club's Sheffield Schools Africa Cup at Hillsborough.

The competition, which was launched last year, saw pupils from 60 schools across Sheffield produce videos explaining why the city should host the World Cup in 2018.

Entries were whittled down to 32, and each school was then asked to represent a World Cup country, and battle it out on the pitch to be in with a chance of winning the trip

A team of 10 from Bradway, who represented Argentina, took victory against Switzerland, represented by Abbey Lane School, in the grand final at Hillsborough last month.

Bradway's team captain Callum Semple, aged 10, said: "I can't believe that we won and in a few days we will be going to South Africa. We are all over the moon."

On their trip, the lucky team will take in the sights of South Africa, visiting a Nelson Mandela museum and an elephant orphanage. They will also meet children at a Johannesburg school.

Owls community manager Marcus Brameld, who will be going on the trip, said: "We have tried to make it as exciting and educational as possible for the children who worked really hard.

"I am sure it will be a great success as there are plenty of things to see and do including learning about the life of Nelson Mandela, getting to see elephants close up and let's not forget the football."
