Souvenir hunters caught on the hop as mini-toads sell out

PEOPLE wanting to buy keepsake versions of the Larkin Toads, which appeared on the streets of Hull this summer, look set to be disappointed.

Demand for “mini toads”, produced to remember the popular arts project, has outstripped supply.

With just weeks to go before the Larkin celebrations end, organisers have had to draw a line under the lengthy waiting list.

Glynis Charlton, from Larkin with Toads, said demand had been “literally overwhelming”.

She said: “We thank everyone for their patience.

“We are just trying to get round to everybody on the waiting list.

“As we are getting batches in we are contacting people to come and get them.”

The moulded plastic toads are being produced at Hull School of Art and Design and buyers can commission students to execute their own designs for an extra fee.

She added: “A lot of people are buying them for presents. A lot of them are getting them for children to decorate – and I’ve even heard of one school making jelly in them.

“One couple who’d just got married bought one for each of their three girls.”

T-shirts, aprons and tote bags, with designs by Sasha Heath, Domanic Li, Pinky and Michael Taylor, are still available through the online shop but only for a limited time.
