Spa museum ready to show how it made its reputation

THE array of treatments that helped to forge Harrogate's reputation and attracted visitors across the world to take the spa town's famous waters are to go on show once more.

The town's Royal Pump Room Museum has installed 12 new panels detailing the treatments available at the Royal Baths which opened in 1897 and closed in 1969 and Royal Bath Hospital which opened in 1826 and closed in 1969, including a vichy massage and sulphur bath, and deep pool therapy.

The panels, which are paid for as part of a 10,000 grant from Renaissance Yorkshire, also detail the rich history of Harrogate's iconic buildings and green spaces.

Nicola Dyke, exhibitions and collections assistant at the museum, said: "The panels look really good, it is an improvement on what was there already and we are very pleased with the results.

"The history of Harrogate's iconic spa town status and the different treatments on offer make very interesting reading."

The 10,000 grant has also been used to record adult and child audio guides for Knaresborough Castle and for new portable seating for the Mercer Art Gallery.

The Royal Pump Room Museum has been closed for two weeks while the panels are installed but reopens on Saturday.
