Spade that can't be trumped

STAFF at Sheffield's Kelham Island Museum have taken delivery of the world's largest spade, which has gone on display in the new Hawley Gallery. The spade, which measures an impressive 3.61m (12ft) high and weighs 180kg (400lbs), will be seen alongside the Hawley collection of internationally important tools, cutlery and measuring instruments as well as numerous, "average-sized" spades.

Ken Hawley is pictured holding a mole catcher's spade. The chairman of the Ken Hawley Collection Trust, Keith Crawshaw, said of the new addition: "The sheer scale of the spade is very impressive and we are keen for children to bring along their own spade and camera and have a photograph taken alongside this record-breaking shovel."

It was made in Lancashire by Bulldog Tools, to mark the firm's 230th anniversary.
