Spare a thought for the birds

Rachel Stanhope, Selby District Council's countryside officer, is helping to protect Britain's wild birds which have been suffering during the sub-zero temperatures.

She will be at an event on Saturday organised by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to make "birds cakes" out of lard and bird seed, as well as building bird boxes to provide shelter during the spring and the breeding season.

Concerns have been mounting over the welfare of wildlife after the nation has endured the coldest spell for nearly 30 years this winter.

Ms Stanhope said: "Obviously it has been a tough winter for wildlife because of the freezing conditions.

"This weekend's event is aimed at giving birds a little help to ensure they survive the wintry conditions."

The RSPB has urged householders to put out food and water and provide shelter for birds after the charity claimed that the freezing weather is a "potential death sentence" for many species.

This weekend's free event will be at the Barlow Common nature reserve, off the A1041 Selby to Snaith Road, between 10am and noon. More information is available from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's community development officer, Steve Meays, on 01904 659570.
