Special delivery of world-famous grand pianos offers competitors key to success

The world-famous Steinway
Boston Pianos, each worth tens of thousands of pounds, have been carefully manoeuvred into the homes of Leeds families who have volunteered to provide a quiet practice space for this year’s competitors.

Sixty-five talented pianists from 20 countries are taking part in the contest, which runs from August 29 to September 16, and each will need to practise on the grands for at least six hours a day.

Those who secure a place in the finals will get the chance to perform on a Steinway Concert Grand piano with the 
Hallé Orchestra, directed by Sir Mark Elder, in Leeds Town Hall.

Dame Fanny Waterman, chairman and artistic director of the competition, said: “I am most grateful to all the piano hosts for such generosity in providing practice facilities in their own private homes.”

Steinway & Sons and the 
Leeds International Piano Competition have worked together since the event’s inception in 1961.

Tickets are £5 per session for the first and second stages; £6 for the semi finals and between £14 and £48 for the finals.
