Speed crackdown on village's streets

A CRACKDOWN is to take place on drivers speeding through Penistone, after an hour-long speed check caught more than a quarter of motorists driving over the 30mph limit.

This comes after police officers with the Penistone Safer Neighbourhood Team have been working with pupils from Oxspring Primary School in Sheffield Road to highlight the issue of speeding motorists in the village.

Last Wednesday, 129 vehicles driving along Sheffield Road were checked in an hour using the officers’ handheld speed gun.

Of those, 38 were found to be travelling at speeds exceeding the 30mph limit.

Drivers caught speeding were then handed leaflets highlighting the dangers of breaking the speed limit by children from Oxspring Primary School.

Police community support officer Andrew Thompson said: “It is disappointing to find that over a quarter of people tested were over the limit.

“These drivers need to realise the peril of their actions, in particular outside of a school with such young pupils.

“I hope this operation has educated not only drivers but also the children who now understand the possible dangers of the roads and how to avoid them.

“We will be monitoring drivers throughout the area, in particular those on Sheffield Road.”
