Speed limit cut on busy commuter route

A Doncaster Council spokesman said that a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in operation on a section of the A6182 White Rose Way, which is usually a national speed limit road, in order to “protect the workforce carrying out improvements on this busy route.”

They added: “This measure will stay in place for the duration of the Doncaster Southern Gateway Improvement Scheme works, programmed for completion in early summer 2013.”

The roadworks have already been subject to delay due to “unanticipated utility works”, and motorists are being asked to pay attention to new information signs being put up along the route.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: “We are doing all we can to minimise disruption during these vital works and we ask motorists to bear with us.

“These improvements will see the whole route become a dual carriageway and this will significantly reduce congestion and speed up journey times once finished.

“More importantly, the project creates the right infrastructure to help new developments get off the ground, creating new jobs and economic growth across the borough.”

Around £10m of investment for the road improvement project has come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), while a further £9.7m has come from the Department for Transport.

Meanwhile, works to reopen Doncaster’s North Bridge for outbound traffic are to start on Monday, September 24.

North Bridge, part of North Bridge Road, has been limited to buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians since St George’s Bridge opened in 2002.

The roadworks, scheduled to take eight weeks, will mean all motorists can use the bridge heading out of Doncaster.
