Speed signs installed near school to protect children

NEW signs encouraging motorists to slow down have been installed close to a Sheffield primary school, after a cluster of collisions in the area.

Children from Firs Hill Primary School in Orphanage Road, Pitsmoor, will also be going out onto the streets and watching officers from Sheffield Council's road safety team "zap" drivers with a speed gun to see how fast they are travelling.

John Bann, head of transport and highways at Sheffield Council, said: "We receive complaints from residents across Sheffield about people who speed.

"We are committed to tackling this problem city-wide and doing all we can to keep people safe on the roads.

"Working with the Community Assembly managers and chairs we've been able to fund two signs in the area that should act as a prompt to drivers to slow down.

"We are using a variety of methods to tackle speeding in the city, including innovative and non-traditional ones such as this, where we can move the vehicle-activated signs to locations that will best tackle the problem of speed."

The two new signs are being installed near to Barnsley Road and Scott Road in an attempt to cut both speed and accidents on those streets.

They work by flashing up a "slow down" warning sign to motorists that approach them too quickly.

These locations were chosen after a consultation with the North East Community Assembly, due to the number of crashes in the area that were caused by speeding drivers.

Mr Bann added: "It's vital that we teach children about road safety at a very early age. By explaining the risks on the road and how to stay safe we prepare them for life."
