Speeding alert in property hot spot

A MAJOR traffic survey has revealed more than a third of drivers are speeding through one of York's most sought-after postcode areas.

The research was carried out on Bishopthorpe Road and monitored the speeds of a total of 16,000 vehicles travelling to and from the city centre.

The findings revealed that almost 35 per cent of the vehicles were being driven in excess of the 30mph limit – with one car being clocked at 61mph.

Labour councillors are now calling on York Council to introduce a 20mph zone along Bishopthorpe Road in the hope of reducing the number of speeding vehicles.

Coun Julie Gunnell, who represents the Bishopthorpe Road neighbourhood in the Micklegate ward, said: "The area where the speed survey took place is extremely busy with schoolchildren in the mornings and afternoons heading to and from Scarcroft, Millthorpe and Knavesmire schools, and is a heavily residential area.

"We think the safety issues here merit some action by the council so we hope there is a positive response to a petition signed by the many concerned local people."
