Speeding driver jailed for lying to the police

Kevin Miller’s car was recorded at 39mph in a 30mph zone in February last year.

Paperwork relating to the speeding offence was sent to Miller, 52, but then completed in the name of another Sheffield resident - indicating that they admitted driving the vehicle at the time.

A fine sent to the named driver went unpaid and the matter was then sent to court.

During a hearing held on July 27 last year, the driver named by Miller was disqualified in his absence.

That September, however, the named driver received a letter from the DVLA informing him that his driving licence had been revoked.

He then made a declaration before the magistrates court the following month, saying that he knew nothing of the motoring matter for which he had been disqualified.

The case was then referred to the police, who began investigating. It transpired that the named driver had lost his driving licence in 2011 and had applied for a replacement.

Miller was then arrested for perverting the course of justice on February 15 this year.

He was interviewed regarding the matter and admitted to being the driver at the time of the speeding offence.

A spokesman for the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership said: “Miller stated that he had found a driving licence in the Heeley area of Sheffield some 14 or 15 months ago and kept it instead of returning it to the DVLA or handing it into the police.

“He stated that he intended to try to get away with the speeding offence by sending in the details of another driver, copying them directly from the driving licence that he had previously found.”

Following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court earlier this month, Miller was convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to 28 days imprisonment.
