Speeding driver jailed over girl death crash

A 13-year-old girl suffered fatal head injuries when an uninsured driver's speeding BMW crashed into a car being driven by her father.

Aanisah Rashid's father Asad had been driving the teenager and her younger sister Monisha back to their mother's home in Thorn Drive, Heaton, Bradford, when his Bentley Silver Spur was struck by Gibran Hussain's vehicle on Haworth Road in January last year.

Hussain, 21, of Box Tree Close, Girlington, Bradford, initially claimed his father was the person behind the wheel at the time of the fatal collision, but later told police he was the driver.

He pleaded guilty to causing Aanisah's death by careless driving and yesterday a judge at Bradford Crown Court jailed him for nine months and banned him from driving for three years.

He will also have to take an extended driving test before ever lawfully getting behind the wheel again.

Aanisah, a pupil at Belle Vue Girls School, was a front seat passenger and was not wearing a seatbelt.

The court heard how Mr Rashid, 41, had been turning right into Thorn Drive when the BMW, which was estimated to have been doing between 53mph and 63mph on the 30mph road, crashed into the passenger side of his Bentley.

Prosecutor Abdul Iqbal said just before the scene of the fatal crash there was an illuminated sign warning drivers that the limit on the road was 30mph and advising them to slow down.

Hussain was seen in a dazed state following the crash and initially admitted he was not insured to drive the BMW.

But he later lied to the police saying that his father, who had arrived at the scene, had in fact been driving. Hussain also claimed that he had been doing between 30 and 40mph.

His barrister Simon Myers said his client was genuinely remorseful.
