Speedster in death crash jailed for four years

A speeding driver who caused a Sunday afternoon crash that claimed the life of an 87-year-old great-grandfather and seriously injured four other people has been jailed for four years.

Front seat passenger Gulab Din, of Hollins Road, Girlington, Bradford, died at the scene of the two-car collision on Toller Lane in the city last November and three of his family suffered a catalogue of injuries.

Mr Din’s 30-year-old son Saeed Ahmed spent three months in hospital after suffering multiple fractures when the Suzuki Alto he was driving was struck by Bilal Hussain’s out-of-control Vauxhall Vectra.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Mr Ahmed had lost a significant portion of his memory as a result of crash which also left his 31-year-old wife and 11-year-old son badly hurt.

Unsar Kauser suffered facial fractures in the incident and the couple’s son had to have metal plates inserted in a broken leg and hip.

A fourth passenger in the Suzuki, Mr Ahmed’s five-year-old daughter, escaped with shock.

Hussain, 23, of Bingley Road, Bradford, only suffered minor injuries himself in the collision, but his brother Abubakr Hussain had to be cut free from Vectra having suffered a broken collar-bone, pelvis and ribs.

Hussain, who had no previous convictions, told police after the crash that he could not remember the collision but thought he may have been going to Tesco to do some shopping that afternoon.

The court heard that the fatal crash occurred after Hussain had driven only about 300 yards from his home.

Prosecutor Bashir Ahmed said the Vectra had accelerated hard and witnesses estimated that it was travelling at up to 60mph on the 30mph road.

Shortly before losing control of the Vectra Hussain overtook other vehicles by driving round the wrong side of a keep left bollard.

Mr Ahmed described how an on-coming female motorist had to move to her left to avoid a collision, but after Hussain regained the correct side of the single carriageway he lost control of the Vectra.

The Vectra slid over the cross-hatching in the centre of the road and collided with the on-coming Suzuki.

Mr Ahmed said the Suzuki could not avoid the collision as it all happened in a matter of seconds.

Hussain was told he will serve a maximum of half of the four-year term and he was disqualified from driving for the next four years.
