Spend a penny in Leeds to help Children's Heart Surgery Fund

A whacky fundraising involving a state of the art toilet will help raise money the Children's Heart Surgery Fund.

The people of Leeds will be giving new meaning to the term ‘spending a penny’ when the Geberit AquaClean Tour rolls into town this weekend.

It aims to raise vital funds for the Keeping the Beat campaign, which is trying to raise £500,000 for a revolutionary children’s heart theatre at LGI.

The shower toilet, which cleans with a gentle, airy water spray at body temperature, will be in Briggate on July 30 and 31. Each penny received will be turned into a £1.

Visitors will also be encouraged to share their “first time face” on social media. They can have their photo taken to capture the moment they first experience this new toilet technology, with each share raising awareness of the cause.

Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s corporate fundraiser Ellie Brown said: “It sounded like a mad idea to begin with, but we think it’s a great way to raise funds for our worthy cause and of course get people to see and try out a new technology. We want as many people as possible to come along and spend a penny during the tour and share their first time face. The more people that take part the more we can help our Keeping The Beat campaign. Each penny turns into a pound and a pound can do a lot of good.”

Sara Johnston, Geberit’s consumer marketing manager, said: “It’s a great way of raising awareness and raising money while having a bit of fun.”
